Sir Nicholas Patten was called to the Bar by Lincoln’s Inn in 1974. In 1988 he was appointed Queen’s Counsel. This involved frequent appearances in the High Court in London and in appeals to the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords. He was also regularly instructed in trust and company disputes in Singapore, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. From 1988 to 2000 he served as chairman of the Chancery Bar Association.
In 2000, Sir Nicholas was appointed a judge of the High Court (Chancery Division), and in 2009 was promoted to the Court of Appeal. He was also a judge of the Patents Court and heard claims involving all types of intellectual property. As a High Court judge, he served as Vice- Chancellor of the County Palatine of Lancaster and was responsible for the organisation of chancery and mercantile sittings in the North of England. In 2018, he served as Treasurer of Lincolns Inn.
